Meet Dr. SonjaMae Langton-Yanowitz
Dr. Langton-Yanowitz has taken board certification tests making her eligible to practice in over 40 states. She completed a General Practice Residency program through the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. During this residency she worked at the United States’ busiest trauma center, the Los Angeles County Hospital, and a Veteran’s Hospital that serves the largest homeless Veteran population in the country. There she received advanced training in placing tooth implants, IV sedation, operating room dentistry, extractions, root canals and managing head and neck cancer patients, among other procedures. Dr. Langton-Yanowitz is fluent in Spanish and was able to work with a majority of her California patients in their own language.
Even though Dr. Langton-Yanowitz has traveled far to receive some of her training, she is proud to call Minnesota her home. She is the fourth generation in her family to grow up in Rochester, where she attended Century High School. She enrolled in Carleton College in Northfield where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa (top 15% of the graduating class). During undergrad she studied tropical biology in Costa Rica through Duke University. Then she continued her education at the University of Minnesota Dental School. During dental school, she spent a semester at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.
After her residency in California, she decided to move back to Rochester to be close to her family. She joined Apple Tree Dental, a non-profit that provides dental care to the under-served. She later opened Blue Sky Dental with the mission of providing the highest quality dental care to the Rochester area in a uniquely relaxing environment.
Dr. Langton-Yanowitz values continuing education. For example, she has enjoyed adding Invisalign, an option to invisibly straighten teeth, to her specialty procedures. In addition, she has taken a series of intensive Advanced Implant Seminars in Seattle sponsored by the International Dental Implant Association.
Giving back to her community is important to her, In both Minnesota and California, she has volunteered her services to Project Homeless Connect, Union Mission Gospel, Give Kids a Smile, and the Good Samaritan Dental Clinic. She also has supervised dental students providing care to children in mobile settings. In her free time she enjoys playing the Irish Fiddle and the organ, gardening, traveling, hiking, biking, sailing and cross country skiing.
